Lowell Wright Signs with York9 FC

Lowell Wright has been signed by York9 at the age when most of us are creating stories about the really stupid things we did as kids. The 16-year-old forward has been slotted to round out the 23-man roster. Age aside, Managing consultant Angus McNab expressed faith in the young prospect; “we really believe in Lowell and are investing in him. This is the longest contract the club has ever offered a player and with the club options could run until the end of 2024”.

This is the longest contract the club has ever offered a player.

Brampton native Wright spent the 2019 season with the Woodbridge Strikers. He made 3 appearances out of their 10 league matches. He also saw time in a playoff match against the Oakville Blue Devils. (Check out Dan Baldwin’s great coverage of the 2019 season here). The club did not make it past the first round. Before that, he spent time at TFC Academy, as well as a brief stint at Sigma FC.

McNab explained that the signing has occured sooner than originally planned. “The situation we have faced with the pandemic has challenged our international recruitment plans but has brought opportunity. Lowell has trained with the squad and been on Jimmy and Stally’s radar for a while.”

“We had been discussing offering Lowell a contract to start in January but the challenges we have faced with our international signings means Brian Lopez will not be in our 23-man roster. This means we can take the opportunity to bring Lowell into the squad six months early and gives him a phenomenal development opportunity.”

Wright could not be more excited. “Playing professional football has been a lifelong dream of mine”, Wright explained. He shares this goal with many other young athletes working their way through the development system. Yet, few of those will ever reach the professional ranks, and fewer still at such a young age. Wright expressed excitement “to get to work with the coaching staff and the rest of the team. This is a great opportunity and I plan on repaying the club’s faith in me with hard work and a strong commitment to the club’s plans.”
